INDIANAPOLIS – The Maryville women's soccer team tied the University of Indianapolis 0-0 in the first Great Lakes Valley Conference match of the season on Sunday. The Saints earned numerous strong scoring chances and outshot the Greyhounds, but neither side found the back of the net to earn the win.
Â
The Greyhounds tested starting goalkeeper
Katie Nash early in their first GLVC showdown. Sarah Wegener put a low shot on to be turned away by the De Soto, Missouri native for her first of two saves on the day. Freshman
Elsa Nilson-Hurtig followed up less than a minute later by sending one to UIndy keeper Makenna Hickens but had her shot saved.
Â
At 26:50,
Madison Canoy put a shot on goal to kick start a strong end to the first half for her team.
Erin Barnes tested Nickens again in the 35th minute while forwards Canoy and
Ashlyne Hunt used their speed to create a pair of shots in the final few minutes of the half.
Â
A fairly uneventful start to the second ramped up when the Greyhounds applied pressure with a dangerous cross into the box, only to be turned away by a
Lotte Brands clear. Canoy, on the counterattack again, out-sprinted the defense and fired a shot that missed above the left corner of the goal.
Â
Both defenses continued to subdue offense in the rainy conditions late into the game. UIndy made one last effort in the final minute, sending another cross into the box. The Saints' backline stepped up to clear the pass again, this time freshman
Brynn Presley sending the ball out of the defensive zone as time expired.
Â
The tie moves
Lori Chalupny's squad to 2-2-1 heading into their next matchup against the University of Illinois Springfield. The second conference match of the season takes place on Friday, Sept. 16 at Maryville Soccer Field starting at 4 p.m.
