Newberry, S.C. – The Maryville field hockey team was looking to build a three-game winning streak but Newberry College stopped the Saints 3-0 Friday evening.
Liz Bierhals came up with a season-high 13 saves to guide the Maryville defense.

The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter as each team had one shot. Newberry applied the early pressure in the second quarter, and
Liz Bierhals made three straight saves before the Wolves finally pushed a goal across. The Saints had a scoring opportunity late but they still trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Newberry was awarded a penalty shot in the third and converted to double its lead to 2-0. The Saints earned a penalty corner but could not cut into the deficit. Maryville pressed to grab its first score but were stymied by the Wolves defense.

Maryville slips to 2-2 this campaign, and Newberry improves to 3-1. The Saints close out their road swing in the Palmetto State with a game at No. 10 Converse University Sunday, Sept. 18.
