St. Louis – Three early goals pushed the Maryville field hockey team into a deficit it could not recover from as Mansfield dealt the Saints a 5-0 defeat Saturday afternoon.

Saramae Radel scored off a penalty corner in the fourth minute of play to give the Mountaineers the quick 1-0 lead. Mansfield doubled its lead at the 6:04 mark and eventually pushed the margin to 3-0 after the first quarter.

The Saints had a scoring chance midway through but
Tia Sansone's shot went wide. The Maryville defense shut out Mansfield in the second quarter. The Saints earned a penalty corner in the opening minute after halftime.
Dane Thiart's shot was turned aside, and
Jessie Earley's follow up attempt was blocked. Maryville nearly tallied late in the third but it was Mansfield adding to its total. The visitors scored again in the fourth before Maryville earned one last penalty corner. However, Thiart's shot was blocked.
Liz Bierhals came up with seven save in net for Maryville.

Maryville is now 2-4 on the season with Slippery Rock coming to town Sunday, Sept. 25, for an 11 a.m. contest.
