St. Louis –
Paige Aiken tallied for the Maryville field hockey team but Slippery Rock slid past the Saints 4-1 Sunday morning. The tally is Aiken's first of the season.
Â
The Rock took a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter but the Maryville defense stood tall the rest of the half as the Saints remained within one goal. Maryville applied pressure and earned two straight penalty corners. On the second,
Delanie Winkelmann's shot was saved but the ball bounded out to the right side. From a steep angle, Aiken fired in a shot that tied the game at 1-1.
Â
Slippery Rock rebounded by scoring the eventual game winner six minutes later. Maryville had scoring chances in the fourth but
Jessie Earley and
Tia Sansone's attempts were saved. The Rock added on two more goals to seal the victory.
Â
Maryville slips to 2-5 on the campaign, while Slippery Rock improves to 4-3. The Saints are next in action Friday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Rhodes College.
