SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Maryville University men's soccer team dropped its second consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-0 to Northeastern State University in a neutral site matchup. The Saints outshot the River Hawks 22-6 in the contest, but the NSU goalie was up to the task, making seven saves.
Looking to rebound from Thursday's loss, the Saints came out of the gate firing shots.
Bryce Dickerson put one on goal at 4:15 and tried again less than a minute later but missed the net.
Outshooting the Riverhawks 4-1 just before the 27th minute, NSU defenseman Ryan McCully found the back of the net to put his team up 1-0.
Fabian Wetl tried to tie the game up moments after the next kickoff but was again denied by Niklas Kirhoff. Maryville went on to create several more scoring chances before the end of the first half to no avail.
The Saints continued pressing with numerous shots to open the second half, but it would be NSU's Flynn Semmerling who got the next goal to extend the lead. After eight more shot attempts and two shots on goal, time expired on a comeback, sending Maryville back home with a 1-3 record to begin the year.
Conference play opens up for the men's soccer team on Sunday, Sept. 11, in their next match against the University of Indianapolis. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT) in Indianapolis, Ind.
