Billikens Pull Away Late from Saints in Field Hockey Action

Maryland Heights, Mo. - The Maryville field hockey team trailed by just one until well into the third quarter before Saint Louis University pulled away late. The Billikens used three second-half scores to down the Saints 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Sport Port International. Delanie Winkelmann had three shots while Maryville keeper Liz Bierhals stopped nine SLU shots.

The Billikens earned four penalty corners in the first quarter but the Saints defense kept SLU off the board. Bierhals made three early saves before the Billikens finally pushed one past. The Saints worked for two straight penalty corners and Winkelmann nearly leveled the game. Halftime arrived with the Saints still only down 1-0

Winkelmann and Florieke Spa had two good scoring chances early in the third but they were saved by SLU's goalie. Maryville was playing a player down when SLU struck for its second score midway through the third. The Saints had another penalty corner early in the final frame but the attempt was again saved. The Billikens sealed the game with two late goals in the fourth.

The Saints now stand at 4-5 on the campaign. Maryville hits the road for its final two games of the season as tilts at Coker and Wingate close the year.
