Allendale, Mich. - The Maryville women's basketball was looking to upset No. 3 Grand Valley State but the Lakers used a late rally to down the Saints 70-56.
Haidyn Pitsch paced Maryville with 14 points, while
Carsyn Fearday and Anotinette Mussorici added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Saints trailed by just four points in the fourth quarter before the Lakers pulled away.
Grand Valley State recap
The Lakers led for the early portion of the game and were up 20-11 early in the second quarter. Mussorici sank two free throws, and
Rylee Mulvaney connected from deep to cut the gap to four. The Saints stayed close and a three-point play by
Karlee Feldman brought them to 23-21 at the 6:34 mark. GVSU stretched its margin to 34-28 at halftime.
Â
The Lakers led by double digits in the third and were still up 52-42 in the final minutes of the quarter. Feldman converted inside, and Mussorici splashed in two more at the line. After a defensive stop,
Haidyn Pitsch was fouled just before the buzzer and her two charity tosses trimmed the lead down to 52-48.
Â
The teams traded buckets to start the fourth, and a Feldman layup made it 54-50 with eight minutes remaining. However, the Lakers embarked on a 13-2 run to take their largest lead of the day to prevent the Saints from sweeping both ends of their trip to Michigan.
