INDIANAPOLIS –. Maryville men's soccer fell 3-2 in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The Saints rallied in the second half after falling behind 2-0, but time ran out on a comeback bid with a 3-2 final score.
Run of Play:
- Clayton Hamler got a scoring chance at 3:16 in the top of the box but had his shot blocked on the way to the net.
- In the 16th minute, Tim Smith put a low shot on goal that was denied by goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer who slid over to make the save.
- On the counterattack after a Quinn Connolly attempt on net, Lewis found Artus Gorodnickis for the game's first goal at 27:31.
- Maryville continued to find good scoring chances for the remainder of the first half, with two more shots on target coming from Marcus Kalebo and Miguel Cobos.
- The Saints dominated possession early in the second half, getting shots from Clayton Hamler and Smith. It would be Lewis who capitalized in the 67th minute, however, to double their lead on a Joram Bogers goal.
- Kelvin Mulinya responded two minutes later when he rocketed a bouncing ball past Doppelhofer to cut the lead in half.
- Now with momentum, Maryville earned two more good opportunities and a corner kick in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, the Flyers added to their lead with another goal from Gorodnickis.
- At 81:17, Jimmy Doherty struck back with his third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Yayo Mutombo.
- The men got a corner and a couple of shots off before time expired, but a Doppelhofer save at 89:14 closed the door on a Maryville comeback.
