ALBERTVILLE, Ala. – Maryville University softball dropped the first two contests of the Charger Chillout Tournament in Albertville, Ala., on Friday. The Saints were shut out by Carson-Newman University in game one and dropped game two to Union University (Tenn.) 4-8 despite two RBI from Erin Sammelmann.
  
Carson-Newman Recap
Carson-Newman led off the first inning with a two-run home run to put Maryville in an early deficit. Saints starter Chayse Ramey settled in over the next few innings, but the Eagles struck for three more in the fifth to open a 5-0 lead.
 
A pair of walks in the bottom of the fifth had the Saints in business, but the Carson-Newman reliever worked out of the jam. In the sixth, Carly Nolde led off with a single but the Eagles again stifled the Saints' rally.
 
Melanie Nelson tallied a bunt single in the seventh, but a double play ended the game with a 5-0 win in favor of Carson-Newman.

Union Recap
Taylor Shingler acted as a spark in the first inning of game two, working a leadoff walk before stealing second base. Nelson walked and Corona singled to left field, but Union threw out Shingler at third base. Mandi Lenon was then hit by a pitch and Erin Sammelmann drove in the game's first run with a single through the right side.
 
Maryville added another run in the top of the third on another RBI knock from Sammelmann. Nelson reached on an error and advanced to second base before eventually coming across to score on the single.
 
The Bulldogs cut into the lead with an RBI groundout in the third before taking the lead on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. They added on in the sixth with five runs to extend it to 8-2.
 
With their backs against the wall in the top of the seventh, the Saints scored two runs on a two-out triple from Kylie Swinney. Union, however, struck out the next batter looking to wrap up game two with an 8-4 final.
