Saints Soar Past Cardinals in Two-Game Sweep on Sunday

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Saints edged out two victories against William Jewell University in Sunday's doubleheader matchup to push their win streak to seven games.
 
Game 1 Recap
Coming off a doubleheader sweep on Saturday against Rockhurst, the Saints were looking to continue their winning streak against William Jewell. Action started later in game one after Emily Corona hit a shot to center field, scoring Chayse Ramey to put the Saints up one. Mandi Lenon then came up big for the Saints, crushing a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Corona and Taylor Duff.
 
Up 3-0, William Jewell responded in the fourth and fifth closing the score to 3-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Emersen Heron sent a shot to left field, scoring both Erin Sammelmann and Kylie Swinney making the score 5-2.

The Saints kept pushing in the bottom of the sixth when Caitlin Rodriguez pinch-hit and hit a sacrifice fly-ball to the left field, scoring Callie Harrison and putting the Saints ahead 6-2. William Jewell gained one run of their own, but the Saints got the victory with a final of 6-3.
 
Ramey was in the circle for the Saints and tossed a complete game. The Decatur, Ill., native tallied three strikeouts and only two earned runs.

Game 2 Recap
Looking for a sweep of the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, the Saints started off strong in game two. Maryville tallied the first runs of the game with a single by Swinney, scoring Corona. The action continued in the inning off a single to right-field by Heron, plating Swinney.
 
The Cardinals scored two runs of their own in the second, tying the game at two going into the bottom of the inning. Corona put the Saints ahead in the second, blasting a double down the left field line, scoring Duff.
 
In the fifth inning, William Jewell took the lead off a two-RBI double down the left field line making the score 4-3 WJU. The Cardinals added a run later in the inning, making it 5-3 through the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning by Heron scored Harrison, closing the score at 5-4.
 
William Jewell added another run in the sixth, but the Saints offense came up clutch in the bottom half, driving in four runs to take the lead and the win.

Lenon had a shot to center field scoring both Melanie Nelson and Brooklyn Moore. The Saints gained advantage off a Heron single to center scoring both Sammelman and Swinney. The pitching staffed allowed no more runs in the match, gaining the W with an 8-6 final score over the Cardinals.
 
The Saints' starting pitcher Heron struck out five Cardinal batters and pitched 4.1 innings. Reagan Smith got the victory for the Saints, pitching 2.2 innings and tallying two strikeouts.
