Maryville Baseball Drops Two to Hawks on Friday

QUINCY, Ill. – Maryville University baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to ninth-ranked Quincy University on Friday.  
 
Game One Recap
The Hawks kept the Saints quiet in the first three frames, piling up eight runs to take an early lead. Jacob Hager hit a three-run home run in the fourth to pull within five runs. The junior from Festus, Mo., currently leads the team with eight home runs. 
 
Quincy continued building onto their lead with a five-run fifth and another in the sixth. Maryville added runs in the sixth on a two-RBI double from Jack Zebig and an RBI double from Michael Gould to bring the score to 14-6. 
 
Griffin Kirn picked up the win for the Hawks with five innings and Tom Conzemius closed out the Saints with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Game Two Recap
Game two starter Jamie Young held the Hawks scoreless through the first two frames of game two, and Zebig gave him a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the third. A two-run shot from the Hawks in the fifth gave them a 2-1 advantage heading into the sixth. 
 
In the top of the sixth, the Saints loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought in Hager to tie the game at two. A few batters later, Gould stepped up with the bases loaded and singled through the left side to put his team ahead 4-2. Another wild pitch in the inning gave the visitors their fifth run.
 
Young was relieved in the bottom of the sixth inning, finishing his outing with five innings pitched, three hits, two earned runs, and a strikeout. The Hawks welcomed the new Saints hurler with a lead-off double followed later by a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Quincy took a 6-5 lead with a three-run home run down the left-field line.
 
In the seventh, Maryville put runners on the corners with one out, threatening to tie the game. Quincy closer Chase Gockel worked out of the jam by getting a three-pitch strikeout and a groundout to finish the game.
