St. Louis – The Maryville field hockey team stretched its winning streak to a program-best four straight with a 4-1 triumph over Lincoln Memorial in the home opener for the Saints. Maryville has already surpassed its victory total of last season.
Calista Crocker put the Saints ahead 1-0 with a score just 2:36 into the game as she collected a save by the LMU keeper and slotted the ball home. The visiting Railsplitters drew level in the fifth minute which ended Maryville's shutout streak that had reached more than 200 minutes. However,
Denise Van der Spuy answered quickly for Maryville.
McKenna Radley pushed the ball toward the LMU goal, and Van der Spuy redirected the ball into the cage for a 2-1 lead. The Saints had five more shots on goal but LMU keeper Ana Carney turned the shots aside.
Lachlan Sanders gave the Saints a cushion when she collected a pass from
Delanie Winkelmann and fired in her second goal of the year at the 38:04 mark.
Florieke Spa put the game away when she dribbled down the left side of the LMU defense and fired in a shot from a steep angle and the 4-1 final. The Saints outshot LMU 26-9, including 17-5 for shots on goal.
Liz Bierhals made four saves on the day.
The Saints are now 4-1 and do not play again until a contest at Mansfield University Friday, Sept. 22.
