Mansfield, Pa. – The Maryville field hockey team saw its program-best four game winning streak come to an end but it took sixth-ranked Mansfield to halt the Saints run 2-0 Friday afternoon.
Â
Mansfield carried the play in the first quarter and earned five penalty corners to just one for Maryville. The Saints defense kept the game scoreless as
Liz Bierhals made three saves. However, Mansfield finally broke through in the final minute of the quarter to take a narrow 1-0 lead.
Florieke Spa had the best scoring chance for the Saints in the first half but her shot was blocked as the game remained just 1-0 at halftime.
Â
Mansfield took advantage of the Saints being down a player on a green card and doubled its lead in the third at the 35:44 mark. Maryville nearly cracked the scoresheet when
Lachlan Sanders ran a shot off the post late in the quarter. The Saints kept up the pressure as
Dane Thiart's shot was turned aside midway through the fourth quarter. Maryville was unable to sneak one past Mansfield keeper August Lewis as the hosts held on for the narrow victory.
Â
The Saints slip to 4-2 but stay at Mansfield University to face Frostburg State Saturday, Sept. 23.
