St. Louis - The Maryville wrestling team rallied late to upset No. 10 McKendree 23-22 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference dual match Friday evening. The Saints won the final two bouts to overcome an eight-point deficit.
 
The teams traded falls as McKendree won the 125 match but Evan Binder answered for Maryville at 133with a fall in just 61 seconds. The Bearcats won the bout at 141 before Javier Gutierrez answered with a 9-4 decision. McKendree took the 157 contest but Cole Ritter notched a 20-4 tech fall at 165.
 
McKendree took the lead with a major at 174 and a tech fall at 184 for a 22-14 lead. With the Saints facing the big deficit, Jeremiah Larson battled to post a pin in the second period to pull the Saints to within 22-20 to set up the decisive final bout at heavyweight.
 
Ryan Herman faced McKendree's Caleb Guise and the score remained 0-0 after the first. Down to start the second period, Herman recorded a quick escape to grab a 1-0 lead. Neither wrestler scored a point the rest of the stanza. The third period started neutral as Guise looked for the take down to jump ahead. Herman's single point proved to be the difference as he stopped his foe and his decision capped the late Maryville comeback.
 
The Saints are competing in two locations Sunday, Jan. 14. Maryville heads to Central Oklahoma for a dual, and the Saints will also send a squad to Central Missouri's Roger Denker Open.
