Harrogate, Tenn. – In the first of three contests in Tennessee, the Maryville field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision against Lander University.
Cloey Turiello scored her second goal of the season for the Saints.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Lander nearly tallied the opening goal at the end of the first quarter but Saints goalie
Jojo Cox stopped a penalty stroke to keep the game scoreless. Early in the second, the Saints converted their first strong scoring chance.
Denise Van der Spuy distributed a pass to
Cloey Turiello who fired in the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Saints nearly doubled their advantage after a penalty corner but had two shots blocked. Lander earned three straight penalty corners and finally converted on its last chance for a 1-1 tie at halftime.
Â
Late in the third quarter, the Bearcats had four straight shots on goal but Cox came up with three saves, and
Lachlan Sanders made a defensive stop to keep the contest deadlocked heading into the fourth. However, Lander finally broke through for the go-ahead goal midway in the fourth, and sealed the win with a late tally.
