Saints Capture Third Straight FIve-Set Triumph with Thriller over Drury

ST. LOUIS — For the first time since the 2014 season, the Maryville volleyball team has won three consecutive five-set matches with a thrilling 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-8 victory over Drury.

Makenna Brauman led three players in double figures with 11 kills, while Ella Brinkmann had a double-double on 10 kills and 13 digs. Ella Domian finished with 10 kills, while Taylor Hasbrook came up with 27 digs. The Saints last won three straight five setters Oct. 17, 18 and 21 during the 2014 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Drury led 14-8 before the Saints tallied four of the next five points. After a Brauman kill, Rachel Schipper served an ace, and Drury committed an error. The Panthers still led 18-16 before the Saints got a kill and two aces from Brinkmann to take the lead. A DU error and a block by Brauman and Hanna Dressing pulled the Saints to match point, which they converted on a Drury error.

Drury used a late push in set two to tie things up before the Saints responded in the third set. Deadlocked at 19-19, the Saints ran off five unanswered points to grab a 24-19. Emma Hoing had a kill to spark the run as Maryville reached set point. Dressing hammered down a kill for a 2-1 lead. The Panthers went on a long spree in the fourth quarter to force another fifth set contest.

The Saints opened the fifth set with a rush by scoring the first five points. Lily Brown opened the set with a kill, and Olivia Klump served back-to-back aces. Brinkmann drilled in a kill, and a DU error pushed the Saints up 5-0. The Panthers chipped away to get within 6-4 but the Saints reeled off a 4-0 burst to take control, capped by a block from Brinkmann and Gracie Newell. Maryville reached match point, and Brauman closed the match with a kill.
