CtREVE COEUR, Mo. – The Maryville women's soccer team saw its run at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament come to an end Thursday night, falling to the No. 5-seeded Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in penalty kicks. The Saints and Tritons fought to a 1-1 draw through regulation, seeing two ten-minute overtime periods come and go to force PKs.
Emily Doane was the lone goal scorer for the Saints, equalizing the contest in the 85th minute to force overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing at Creve Coeur Soccer Complex, both teams battled the cold as temperatures dipped down into the 40s. The Saints defense shined in the first half with UMSL only able to manage one shot in the opening 45 minutes.
Out of the break, action stayed the same before a 71st minute free-kick for the Tritons was hit perfectly for the first score of the game. The Saints, in a situation they had only been in for 45 minutes this entire season, turned on the aggression, peppering the UMSL keeper with shots. It finally cracked as a ball sent in by GLVC Defender of the Year
Lotte Brands gave Doane the opportunity she needed to equalize.
As the teams hit overtime, fatigue started to show with the teams managed only two shots over the 20 minutes of extra play, both by the Saints.
As the game turned to PKs, both teams were perfect through the first four rounds with
Lexi Gentry,
Tori Calvert, Doane and Estanich all successful on their attempts. A save by the Tritons' keeper in the fifth round allowed for Kayley Judy of UMSL to send the Tritons to the finals.
