Saints’ Season Ends in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

ST. LOUIS – The Maryville women's soccer team saw it's NCAA tournament run come to an end in the second round, falling 1-0 to the No. 3-seeded Grand Valley State Lakers.

The Lakers found the net in the 19th minute of action, holding that lead through the end of regulation. The loss for the Saints mark their only one of their historic season, finishing the season 16-1-3 with a GLVC Regular Season title and a NCAA tournament victory to their resume.

The Saints had nearly every player that hit the pitch take a shot on the day, with the Saints out shooting the Lakers 19-8, with a 15-4 ratio in the second 45.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints began on the offensive, scoring multiple chances in the first 10 minutes of play. However, the midfield play of the Lakers excelled as a quick clear and run resulted in the lone goal of the game in the 19th minute. The Saints collected two more shots on goal in the first half as they looked to respond, but to no avail.

Out of the break, the Saints were once again aggressive, as before the Lakers could even get a shot off, Maryville had taken six. The defense of the Lakers withheld the onslaught, keeping the Saints away from solid opportunities.

A late penalty kick opportunity for the Saints looked to be the equalizer with just under a minute to go, but the Lakers' goalkeeper made a miraculous save, ending the contest.
