Softball Loses a Pair of Games to Finish Emporia State Tournament

EMPORIA, Kan. – Maryville University softball dropped a pair of games to finish the weekend at the Emporia State Tournament. The Saints fell 8-2 against Concordia University-St. Paul in the morning game before a 4-3 loss to the University of Sioux Falls in game two.

Concordia-St. Paul opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI single and a fielder's choice that brought in another run. Maryville responded with a run-scoring ground ball to plate Kylie Swinney to cut the lead in half.
 
Starter Mercedes Delgado kept the Bears in check in the third but found more trouble in the fourth. A single and a walk set the stage for an RBI single to center. Two more runs came home on another single to widen the gap to 5-1. 
 
The Bears added three more runs before it was over and closed out an eventual 8-2 final over the Saints.

Maryville fell behind early in game two on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Chayse Ramey settled in from there, keeping the Cougars scoreless over the next five innings. 
 
Kaitlyn Wagner's first-career home run tied the game in the bottom of the third and an RBI single from Melanie Nelson gave the Saints a 2-1 lead in the fifth. In the sixth, Erin Wurst tacked on an insurance run with another RBI single to center field to plate Addison Koth.
 
Down to their final two outs, the Cougars worked a walk and an error to put two runners on. Ramey got the second out of the inning, but a two-run double to center tied the game at three. Hannah Fry then stepped into the box and gave her team a 4-3 lead with an RBI single. 
 
Sioux Falls closed out a 4-3 comeback victory with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning to hand the Saints the second loss on the day.
