St. Louis – The Maryville women's lacrosse team won its second straight battle against a ranked team as the No. 12 Saints took down No. 6 Grand Valley State 7-6. Maryville used a balanced attack as
Helen Bae,
Tia Sansone and
Sydney Tiemann all scored two goals apiece. At No. 6, GVSU is the highest ranked opponent the Saints have defeated as a program.

The Lakers struck first with a goal at the 9:29 mark but that would prove to be the only goal of the first period. The Saints drew even on a Tiemann goal at 12:52 of the second that would ignite a 4-0 run. Maryville won the next draw control, and Sansone deposited her first score of the game for a 2-1 lead 52 seconds later. The Saints forced a turnover, and Sansone delivered again off an assist from
Jessie Hynes.
Helen Bae fired in a goal as the Saints went up 4-1 at the 8:57 mark. The Lakers pulled one goal back but the Saints took a 4-2 edge into halftime.

Maryville pushed across two goals in 39 seconds to expand its lead. Tiemann recorded her second score of the day at the 11:04 mark, and Hynes notched a goal at 10:35 of the quarter for a 6-2 advantage. Grand Valley answered with two quick scores to trim the gap to 6-4. The defenses took over as the Saints held on to their two-goal margin to end the period.

Bae converted a free-position attempt for a 7-4 cushion with 12:37 to play. The Lakers scored just over a minute later to make it 7-5. GVSU had a free-position attempt at the 8:40 mark but Maryville goalie
Gianna Guzek made the save. The Lakers had another shot on goal with five minutes to play but Guzek again stopped the attempt. Grand Valley finally dented the net with a goal at the 2:55 mark to pull within 7-6. GVSU won the ensuing draw control but the Maryville defense did not surrender a shot. The Saints got the ball with 1:55 to play and drained most of the game clock before GVSU forced a turnover with 23 seconds remaining. The Lakers cleared their zone but the Saints forced a turnover with three seconds to play and preserve the victory.
