Women's Lacrosse Claims 2024 GLVC Regular Season Crown with 13-11 win at UIndy

Indianapolis – The Maryville women's lacrosse team claimed its first Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title with a thrilling 13-11 victory at No. 12 Indianapolis. The Saints trailed 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Greyhounds 5-1 to finish league play at 7-0. With the win, Maryville earned the right to host the 2024 GLVC Tournament in St. Louis. Sydney Tiemann scored six times and sits at 309 career goals, just two away from breaking the all-time NCAA Division II record. Gianna Guzek stopped eight shots as the Saints completed an undefeated regular season at 16-0.

Indianapolis recap
UIndy took a 2-1 lead before Chloe Elliott converted a free-position shot to forge a tie. Tiemann fired in back-to-back goals, including a player-down score, to put the Saints on top. Natalie Tomljenovic added her second goal of the day as the Saints built a 5-2 advantage. UIndy scored late in the first quarter to make it 5-3.

After the Greyhounds opened the second with a score, Tiemann collected the ball after a scramble and fired in a shot to the upper corner to complete a hat trick. She grabbed the ensuing draw control and sprinted down the field to deposit her fourth of the day for a 7-4 cushion. However, UIndy tallied five straight to close the half and took a 9-7 lead into the break.

The hosts opened the third quarter with a score before Tiemann tallied to trim the gap to 10-8. The Saints went two players down later in the frame but kept UIndy off the scoreboard to stay close. Both teams defenses clamped down as neither scored in the last nine minutes as the contest moved into the fourth period with the Greyhounds holding the 10-8 edge.

Helen Bae converted a free-position goal to trim the deficit to 10-9 one minute into the period. UIndy picked up a player-up score to rebuild an 11-9 margin over the Saints. Elliott fired in a long-range shot on another free-position attempt to make it 11-10. Bae took advantage of another free-position attempt and tied the game at 11-all with 7:22 remaining. Tiemann collected a pass, turned and fired in a low shot, on what would eventually prove to be the game winner, as the Saints retook the lead 12-11 with 6:37 to play. The Saints forced a UIndy turnover, and Jessie Hynes fed Kylie Pettus in traffic who launched a goal for a 13-11 advantage at the 2:34 mark. UIndy was pressing forward to pull one back but Guzek came up with a huge save. The Saints ran out the clock to earn the regular-season crown.
