Saints Women's Lacrosse Beats Indianapolis 16-9 in First Round of NCAA Tournament

St. Louis – Chloe Elliott and Jessie Hynes scored four goals apiece as the Maryville women's lacrosse team defeated Indianapolis 16-9 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional. The Saints advance to take on Regis University, which beat Grand Valley State, 13-12, for the regional championship Saturday, May 18, at Noon, and the right to advance to the NCAA National Semifinals.

Sydney Tiemann scored 72 seconds into the game to give the Saints the early lead. The score was the 100th of the season for Tiemann, who became the first player in NCAA Division II history to score at least 100 goals in two different seasons. Kylie Pettus and Helen Bae pushed the Saints to a 3-0 margin. UIndy pulled one score back but Hynes fired in back-to-back goals, including a player-up score, for a 5-1 margin. The Greyhounds tallied late in the first quarter.
 
The Saints charged ahead with another 3-0 run. Tiemann and Elliott rocketed in shots, and a crucial player-down goal by Devyn Dimovitz put the Saints on top 8-2. UIndy scored three of the next four goals and chopped their deficit to 9-5. Dimovitz tallied again with eight seconds left in the half for a 10-5 advantage. The teams traded goals in the third quarter as the Saints were up 12-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
 
Haley Ritchie intercepted a pass and sprinted down the field to deposit a goal for a 13-7 lead. The Greyhounds made a push with their own 3-0 run as closed the gap to 13-9 with 9:21 to play. However, Hynes picked up her fourth score of the day, and the Saints scored two more times to seal their first NCAA Tournament win. The victory is the 18th on the season for Maryville and sets a new school record.
