Quincy, Ill. – The Maryville volleyball team ran its winning streak to three to start day two of the Hawk Invitational before losing the finale. The Saints cruised past William Jewell 25-18, 25-11, 25-23 in a nonconference match but fell short against Winona State 25-16, 20-25, 18-25, 23-25.

The Saints dominated their league foe by hitting .342 while holding the Cardinals to only a .161 mark.
Ella Domian hit .524 with 12 kills on just 21 swings.
Emma Hoing cranked down 11 kills with a .455 hitting percentage, while
Ella Brinkmann recorded a double-double on 11 kills and 11 digs. The Saints used a 6-1 run late in the first set to grab the opener while hammering down a .444 hitting percentage.

The Saints defense held WJC to a -.034 mark in the second set. Maryville took a quick 7-2 lead and held it the entire set. A 7-0 run gave the Saints a huge cushion. The Saints trailed for the majority of the third set and were still down 22-19. Three straight kills drew the set level. The Cardinals took the lead again but back-to-back kills by Brinkmann pushed the contest to set point, and a block by
Josey Wahlers and
Lily Brown ended the clash.

Winona State recap
The Saints outhit the Warriors, especially in the first set, but WSU rallied to take the next three sets. Maryville scored four straight points in set one and held the advantage the remainder of the opening set. Still up 16-13, the Saints ripped off an 8-0 run to control the set and finished with a ,474 kill percentage. Set two was tied at 15-15 before Winona State scored five of the next six points to pull even.

Down for most of the third set, Maryville got within 19-17 but WSU tallied five straight to take the lead. The Warriors opened the fourth with four unanswered points but the Saints tied it at 5-all. The score was tied again at 16-16 and was still knotted up at 20 points apiece. WSU edged ahead by three and had two match points. The Saints saved one but were unable to force a fifth set as their winning streak came to an end at three.

The Saints trek to UMSL's Mark Twain Building for another pair of nonconference matches against league foes Saturday, Sept. 21. Maryville takes on McKendree at Noon followed by a 4 p.m. clash against host Missouri-St. Louis.
