Field Hockey Drops Home Bout to Frostburg State, 3-1

ST. LOUIS – The Maryville field hockey team suffered its second loss of the season, dropping it's home opener to the Frostburg State Bobcats.

Delanie Winkelmann was the lone goal scorer for the Saints, with the assist coming from Lachlan Sanders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Within just twenty seconds of action, the Bobcats already found the back of the net. A quick offensive push from the Cats, put the Saints on the heels, resulting in the first score of the bout.

The Saints kept pushing, evening the score at the 6th minute frame when Winkelmann found the back of goal. The Bobcats went on to score at the 10th and the 23rd in the first to leave it 3-1 into the break.

Fresh out of the half, the Saints switched up formations, attempting to slow down the potent offense of the Bobcats who tallied seven shots in the first half. That change worked as the Saints won the shots battle in the second half, limiting the visitors to just one in the entire fourth. However, with the switch, the Saints were unable to capitalize, leaving the score 3-1, marking the second year in a row the Saints have fallen to the Bobcats, 3-1.

COACHES CORNER
Head Coach Maggie Young on the game…
"I think we started out with a lot of excitement, but didn't quite anticipate the speed of Frostburg… I think it shook us a little bit and they took advantage, getting a quick shot off and the goal…. In the second half we made a formation adjustment and I think it helped keep the play more in our midfield and attacking fifty…. We had five corners, we just have to find a way to find the back of the goal in those situations."

Young on the support of Saints Nation…
"It was so much fun seeing how many people came out wearing their red. I think this team has such a great following of fans and even with how many people couldn't make it today there was a lot fo energy on the sideline and the players could feel it, the coaches could feel it, we could hear it. It was really exciting to see all the support out there."

Young on the big performances today…
"Alison Tom couldn't travel with us on the last weekend, but what she did today, being able to create speed and more offensive opportunities, she lit a fire under team today… Calista Crocker has been a constant force for this team and she's all over the place. She knows how to get herself involved and how to support her teammates… Jojo Cox, our goalie, came up big. I think we put her in some unfortunate situations, but as the game went on, she just kept performing, she kept us in that game.
