FAYETTE, IOWA – The Maryville men's basketball team had its the second-most points in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game but Upper Iowa won a shootout 108-105 Sunday afternoon. For the first time in exactly six years, the Saints had three players all score at least 20 points in a game.
Dewayne Vass tied his career high with 24 points, and
Trey Redd had a career-best 22 points on 11-of-12 shooting, while
Luke Williams added 20 points. In addition,
Davis Walker chipped in 11 points, while
Darrius Washington had 10 points. The Saints shot 60.2 percent in the game (47-of-78) including a sparkling 70.5 percent from inside the arc (43-of-61).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints converted 24 of 31 shots from 2-point range for an amazing 80.6 percent mark and shot 69.4 percent overall in the first half. However, the Peacocks hit seven 3-pointers and hit 17 free throws to take a 56-53 lead at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Saints used a 9-1 run to grab a 69-63 lead. Williams hit a 3-pointer, and Lucas Barton scored inside. After two free throws and a layup by Burton, the Saints led by six. Washington and Redd hit buckets as Maryville went up 75-67 with 13 minutes to play. However, UIU went on a big run and took an 85-75 advantage. The Saints got a three-point play from Vass and a jumper by Williams brought the gap down to 85-80. Still trailing 98-93,
Francisco Espinosa hit a jumper to start an 8-0 run. Williams scored on back-to-back layups for the lead, and a Vass basket was good for a 101-98 edge with 4:20 remaining.

Upper Iowa went back on top 102-101 but Vass drove for a layup and a 103-102 edge. The Peacocks sank two free throws before a Williams turnaround jumper from the left pushed the Saints ahead 105-104 with 35.3 seconds to go. UIU missed two free throws but had an offensive put back at 15.7 seconds for a 106-105 lead. However, in looking for the game winning points, the Saints turned the ball over with 2.9 seconds left. The Peacocks hit two free throws for a three-point edge. Maryville drew up a play and had a look at a deep 3-pointer to force overtime but the attempt missed to the right and UIU held on for the win.

The 105 points ties the total scored against Saint Joseph's in a GLVC game Jan. 5, 2017. second-best shooting performance in school history as he hit 10-of-11 shots en route to a career-high 23 points. Redd's 91.7 percent shooting is bettered only by Armon Provo's perfect shooting night (8-of-8) Feb. 7, 2013. Earlier this season, Williams shot 90.9 percent from the field.
