ST. LOUIS – Led by two goals from
Denise Van der Spuy Maryville University field hockey continued its strong run Monday, taking down Roberts Wesleyan 3-0 in the home finale. The shutout is the third straight for the Saints as the defense kept the Redhawks in check, and
Jojo Cox made two saves.
Â
How it Happened:
Maryville struck first in the opening period at the 10:12 mark when
Denise Van der Spuy capitalized on a feed from
Cloey Turiello to extended her school record with the 11th goal of the season. Â The defense held firm in the second, and RWU was unable to break through as the Saints took a 1-0 lead at the break.
Â
Early in the third quarter, Van der Spuy struck again for her 12th goal of the campaign, this time assisted by
Dorothy Fife. Later in the third,
Cloey Turiello sealed the win with her third goal of the year off a pass from
Delanie Winkelmann. The defensive composure was crucial in limiting RWU to only two shots on goal and preserving a clean sheet. Maryville put up its fourth shutout of the season.
