WILSON, N.C. – Senior defender
Riley Monroe scored the first two goals of her Maryville University career as the field hockey team posted its fourth consecutive shutout with a 4-0 victory at Barton College. The victory ensures the first winning season for the Saints who improved to 8-3 on the season. Maryville scored in each quarter of the game to remain unbeaten in the month of October.
Â
How it Happened:
The Saints dominated from the opening whistle and took five shots at the Barton cage. Off a penalty corner,
Tia Sansone fed Monroe who rifled in a low shot at a severe angle for her first career goal and a 1-0 Maryville lead. The Saints continued to possess the ball in the second quarter and earned seven penalty corners. The Turiello sisters combined on Maryville's next score.
Cloey Turiello took a shot that was saved but the ball came straight back to
Skyler Turiello who deposited the ball into the Barton cage for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Â
Midway through the third, the Saints offense scored off another penalty corner. Sansone started the sequence, and
Delanie Winkelmann hammered in the goal from the top of the circle for a 3-0 advantage. Another flurry of penalty corners led to the final score of the game.
Jessie Earley had an attempt blocked but the ball found the stick of Monroe who flicked in her second of the day and her career for the 4-0 final margin.
Â
The Saints did not allow a shot on goal the entire game, and the Bulldogs only managed one shot which was wide of the cage. Maryville piled up 18 penalty corners and recorded 14 shots on goal. The Saints have not allowed a goal since Saint Louis University scored early in the fourth quarter Sept. 28, covering more than 248 minutes of play.
