DURHAM, N.C. – The Maryville University field hockey team saw its four-game shutout streak come to an end as Lander downed the Saints 3-0 in a contest played at Duke University's Jack Katz Stadium. Maryville had not allowed a goal in more than 250 minutes before the Bearcats finally broke through. Lander scored two first half goals that stood up for the contest.
How it Happened:
Lander scored on the first shot on goal of the game to grab the early 1-0 lead. The Bearcats were awarded a penalty stroke and converted for a two-goal margin. The Saints picked up the offensive attack in the second quarter but Lander scored on a deflection to make it 3-0.
The Maryville defense clamped down in the second half and did not surrender a score.
Jojo Cox made five saves in slowing down the Bearcats attack. The Saints looked to break through in the final quarter and possessed the ball for large portions of the stanza but were unable to push a ball across the line.
Records:
Maryville: 8-4
Lander: 10-3
What's Next?
The Saints embark on their final weekend of play and take on Kutztown Sunday, Oct. 27, in a neutral site game played at Frostburg State University.
