CREVE COEUR, Mo. –
Axton Anom played hero for the Maryville men's soccer team, delivering a two-goal performance, the latter of which being an overtime golden goal to send the Saints past No. 1-seeded Rockhurst 2-1 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Saints are heading to their second consecutive title game, setting up a matchup with the No. 3-seeded McKendree Bearcats Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to the regular season meeting with the Hawks, Maryville struck first at the Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex. Anom's opening goal came in the 20th minute after
Magnus Buschmeier hammered a shot off the crossbar. The rebound fell to an unmarked Anom, who entered the game four minutes earlier as a sub, blasted the ball into the net for the early lead.
That score held into halftime as the sun set in Creve Coeur, Mo. The Hawks came out of the break aggressively, pushing deep into Saints territory. Their pressure eventually paid off as a loose ball in the box was knocked in for the equalizer.
Chances came and went for both sides for the remainder of regulation.
Sebastian Weitlaner had a quality look in the 61st minute that was saved, and
Marcos Ayelo fired a dangerous attempt in the 64th minute as Maryville pushed to retake the lead. Neither side broke through, sending the match to overtime tied 1-1.
The extra period lasted just seven minutes, 53 seconds before Anom tallied his second goal of the day. Ayelo delivered a perfectly placed ball, and Anom slotted home the golden goal to send Maryville back to the GLVC finals.
Anom has three career goals, all coming against the Rockhurst Hawks.
