Women’s Soccer Suffers Overtime Loss in GLVC Semifinals

CREVE COEUR, Mo. – The Maryville women's soccer team saw its run at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament come to an end in the semifinals, falling 1-0 to the McKendree Bearcats in overtime. The Saints led the Bearcats in both shots and shots on goal, as well as forcing seven corners over the 95 minutes of play.

GLVC Freshman of the Year Sophia Carter led all Saints in shots with five, while All-GLVC third-teamer Gina Catanzaro tied Carter in shots on goal with two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints were dominant in possession for majority of the contest, fending off a first-minute shot by the Bearcats and responding with attempts in the 6th, 10th and 21st minutes to put pressure on the No. 2-seeded Bearcats. A pair of corners, one in the 27th minute and one in the 29th both spelled trouble, but the Saints were unable to capitalize.

Emily Doane attempted to play the wind to her advantage with a shot just under ten minutes left in the first half, but the Bearcat keeper rejected it to keep it scoreless into the break.

After halftime at Creve Coeur Park came and went, the Saints went right back on the attack. They looked to have the go-ahead in the 47th minute when a saved shot from Catanzaro rebounded to Elsa Nilson-Hurtig who buried it in the back of the net. Despite the preemptive celebrations, it was called off as the line judge ruled the Saints were offsides.

Maryville added on nine more shots after that, with Doane having one of the best of the second half with a header in the 64th minute.

With chances galore, neither team were able to find the goal in regulation, heading to overtime knotted up 0-0. A corner in the 95th minute for the Bearcats was the undoing of the Saints, as a ball bounced around in the box and eventually found its way home to send McKendree to the Sunday championship match.
