COLUMBIA, Mo. – Returning to the alma mater of head coach Charlie Sheretz, the Maryville wrestling team opened its 2025-26 season with a 2-1 showing at the Mizzou Duals hosted by the University of Missouri.

Top-ranked 174-pounder Cole Ritter led the way, going 3-0 on the day and earning the Saints' lone victory against Division I power Missouri.

VS. CENTRAL METHODIST
Freshman Elijah Almarinez got his college career started in style with a 17-2 technical fall at 125 pounds. After Central Methodist claimed three straight decisions to take a 9-5 lead, the Saints took control with wins in the final seven bouts.

Nick Zamora (157) and Logan Ferrero (165) both picked up their first collegiate victories with bonus points, while John Gholson (184) sealed the team win with a fall.

VS. MIZZOU
The Tigers flexed their Division I depth, taking the first six matches—five of them with bonus points—before Ritter stopped the run with a 5-2 decision over Joel Mylin. Missouri won the remaining bouts to close out the dual.

VS. MISSOURI VALLEY
Maryville rebounded strong in its final matchup of the day. Almarinez earned his first career pin in 1:50 to start the dual, and Kody Ketchum and Zamora followed with falls of their own.

Ferrero, Ritter, and Gholson kept the momentum rolling with back-to-back-to-back bonus-point wins—two falls and a technical fall—to put the dual out of reach. Heavyweight Orest Nazarchuk capped the day with a 6-5 decision.
