ST. LOUIS – The Maryville women's basketball team used a dominant second quarter and a balanced scoring attack to pull away from Winona State in a 62-47 victory Saturday afternoon.
Alicia Burgos led the Saints in scoring with 11 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
Annika Pluemer added seven points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was tied at 13-all before the Saints put on a defensive clinic in the second quarter. The Saints seized control with a 14-0 run to open the second quarter to to build a double-digit lead.
Bree Shannon started the burst with a layup, and
Helen Ben followed with a three-point play.
Madyson Rigdon followed with her one three-point sequence, and Pluemer drained a 3-pointer. Yet another Rigdon three-point play put the Saints up 27-13. The Maryville defense forced six straight misses by WSU to start the quarter as the Warriors made one free throw at the 4:10 mark. Winona made its only field goal of the quarter with 2:58 to play as the Saints took a 32-17 halftime advantage. Maryville's defense fueled the surge, forcing eight turnovers in the frame and holding the Warriors to just one field goal on 10 percent shooting.

The Saints pulled away late in the third quarter. Shannon and
Claire Lueken both scored inside. After a WSU hoop,
Olivia Hahn and Lueken made consecutive layups for a 45-25 lead after three quarters. Rigdon made a jumper and a
Liz Behan layup gave the Saints their biggest lead of the day at 49-25.
