KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Maryville men's soccer team saw its 2025 season end in the NCAA tournament, falling 4-3 in a double overtime penalty kick shootout to the Rockhurst Hawks in the second round. The Saints end their season 12-6-2, winning a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship.

Playing on the Hawks own Bourke Field,
Marcos Ayelo scored in just the sixth minute of play for the lone Saints goal of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As quickly as the Saints and Hawks got started for the third time facing each other this season, it was a lead for the Saints. In just the sixth minute of play, Ayelo fought through two Hawk defenders to get clear run at the net, which he converted perfectly to give the Saints the lead.
Aggressive and physical play followed, with 20 total fouls and two yellow cards before halftime. Rockhurst came out of the break on fire, hammering one off the crossbar in the 48th. The Hawks took four more shots before finding the equalizer in the 74th minute.
Â
Leyson Losada had a chance with 40 seconds left in the contest but missed just right to send it to overtime. Both sides traded shots in the first overtime, with
Axton Anom and
Luca Alessandro Ferraro accounting for Maryville's tries in the first ten minute overtime. For the second overtime, fatigue set in for both squads, with Rockhurst forcing a dangerous attempt in the 109th minute, missing the mark as the game went to a penalty kick shootout.Â
Â
Sebastian Weitlaner,
Tommy Barrell and Alessandro Ferrero all converted on their penalty attempts, but the Hawks went 4-of-5 from the spot to advance in the NCAA tournament.
