ST. LOUIS – In a clash of ranked squads, No. 1 Tampa rallied to edge No. 6 Maryville in women's lacrosse 14-10. The teams traded runs, and the defending national champions made the late push to garner the victory.
Marissa Zeno led the Saints with four goals and an assist, while
Helen Bae and
Kylie Pettus both scored two goals apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans scored the first four goals of the game before Pettus netted a player-up goal to get Maryville on the scoreboard. Tampa led 6-1 but Bae, Pettus and Zeno fired in goals to pull the Saints with within 6-4. Tampa made it 7-4 until
Natalie Tomljenovic tallied in the final minute before halftime to make it 7-5.

Zeno tallied the first goal of the third that sparked a 3-0 run by the Saints. Bae followed with a score to tie the game. Just over a minute later, Zeno scored to give Maryville an 8-7 lead at the 9:50 mark of the quarter. Tampa tied the game and retook a 9-8 margin heading into the fourth.

The Spartans led 10-8 before Zeno notched her fourth of the day to pull the Saints to within 10-9 with 11:21 to play. However, Tampa had one final push to extend its advantage and held the Saints off to close out the contest.
