Baseball Takes Final Two Games Versus Saginaw Valley

ST. LOUIS – The Maryville baseball team rebounded from its season opener by winning both games of Monday's doubleheader. The Saints moved to 2-2 on the young season behind two big run-scoring innings.

GAME 1 | MARYVILLE 4, SVSU 3
It looked like another slow offensive day for the Saints as the visiting Cardinals scratched across three runs through five innings while holding Maryville to just five baserunners. But the bats finally came alive in the bottom of the sixth.

After a scoreless inning from Nolan Miller, the Saints erased the three-run deficit with a four-run outburst.

The rally started when Michael Long was hit by a pitch—one of three times he was plunked in the game. Josh Herget followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Cameron Macon, a DePauw University transfer, delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to one. A failed pickoff that ran up the first base line allowed the speedy Macon to score, tying up the game.

After a Nick Daugherty single, it was Gavyn Schacher that gave the Saints the lead with a triple to deep right center.

GAME 2 | MARYVILLE 13, SVSU 2
In stark contrast to game one, the bats erupted early, with Maryville jumping to a 9-0 lead after just two innings of work.

It began with a RBI single by Long, with Dominic Sharp's RBI double making it 3-0. But the major blow came in the first career at bat for Brady Kindhart, as with bases loaded, he blasted a ball deep over the centerfield wall for his first collegiate home run.

The Saints added four more runs on the rest of the game, including the first home run of the season for Ambrose Russo in the fourth.

Sam Cardwell earned the win, throwing 2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. True freshman Blake Sivak made his collegiate debut, closing out the final 1 2/3 innings.

UP NEXT
The Saints head on the road on Feb. 26, to Warrensburg, Mo. with first pitch set for 2 p.m. against the Central Missouri Mules.
