TOPEKA, Kan. – Maryville softball's time at the Washburn Invitational has come to an end, with the Saints falling in extras to Emporia State, before suffering a 9-0 loss to Central Oklahoma to close it's time in Topeka, Kan.
Â
GAME 1 | EMPORIA STATE 2, MARYVILLE 1
With
Chayse Ramey in the circle for the Saints, it looked like a pitching battle as Emporia led 1-0 after six innings of work. After a
Kaitlyn Wagner double in the top of the seventh,
Miranda Bondurant ripped a single into the right center gap, allowing the speedy freshman
Ryli Metcalf to sprint home after pinch running for Wagner, to bring the score tied.
Â
With a runner placed at second in the eighth for extras, the Saints were unable grab the go ahead. ESU responded with the walk-off in the bottom of the frame.
GAME 2 | CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 9, MARYVILLE 0
No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma were able to punish Saints pitchers early, scoring six unanswered runs after just two frames.
Cora Boyle and
Marley Williamson attempted a bit of a rally in the bottom of the third, with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but the Bronchos shut that down, leaving it 6-0.
Â
Both
Addison Koth and
Emily Corona added hits in the final innings, but Maryville was unable to string them together, being left scoreless in the 9-0 tournament finale.
