ST. LOUIS – A day after giving up 14 runs to the Drury Panthers, the Maryville baseball team snagged its first shutout of the season with
Ben Gregory and
Griffin King coming for nine innings of scoreless baseball.
Â
Gregory was filthy all day, punching out eight batters while allowing just three hits and a walk for his first win of the year. It is just the fourth time in the junior's career that he has gone seven or more innings.
Â
On the offensive side,
Gavyn Schacher was the man on a mission, scoring all three Saints runs.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Gregory went six-up-six-down in the first two frames, it was time for the Saints to reward him with some runs. It started with
Josh Herget's hard-hit single, with
Andrew Gould—the younger brother of long-time Saint
Michael Gould—getting his first career hit and extra-base hit all in one, lifting a ball down the left field line for a stand-up double to make it first and third. Schacher then would hammer a ball up the middle allowing both Herget and Gould to cross home.
Â
Â
The Panthers finally got a hit off of Gregory in the third with an error making it first and third. Â A massive strike 'em out, throw 'em out by
Matt Arnold and Gould got the Saints out of the inning.
Â
Gregory went on to record four more punch outs in the next few frames, ending after the seventh inning with over 100 pitches on the day. But before his day was done, Schacher gave him some more breathing room with a RBI double that sent home Gould once again.
Â
King came in at top of the eighth, picking up right where Gregory left off, retiring six-straight Panthers for his first save of the season and the win.
