ST. LOUIS – The story of Maryville baseball's game versus Hillsdale was
Braden Smith, with the sophomore right hander earning his first collegiate complete game. Smith went all nine versus the Chargers, fanning seven batters while allowing just four hits on one earned run.
Three different players recorded RBIs in the contest, with
Ambrose Russo blasting a lead off bomb in the first inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Smith escaped early trouble in the first, Russo rewarded him and quick with a solo shot to deep right center, his third of the season.
The Chargers responded in the top half of the second, evening the score to 1-1, a mark that held into the sixth inning where a Charger blast to centerfield left it 2-1.
Facing their first deficit of the day, the Saints responded immediately, with
Cole Christman hammering a ball down the left field line, allowing Russo to score from third and tying the game.
Josh Herget, with the speedy
Cameron Macon at third, lifted a ball just deep enough in right field to regift the Saints the lead.
With a lead to his back, Smith was perfect, striking out a pair of batters in the eighth, while allowing just one baserunner in the final three innings.
