ST. LOUIS – Chayse Ramey set a Maryville softball program record with 15 strikeouts in game one as the Saints took both ends of a doubleheader against Upper Iowa. She surpassed the previous mark of 14 Ks by Alyssa Callans on two occasions.
Not to be completely outshined,
Cora Boyle set a new career best with 10 strikeouts in game two.
The two gems led the Saints to a 4-0 and 6-1 victory over the Peacocks.
GAME 1 | MARYVILLE 4, UPPER IOWA 0
Ramey set the tone in the first inning as she set down all three UIU batters.
Emily Corona was hit by a pitch, took second on
Jenna Kosnoff's single up the middle and scored on an error for the lone run the Saints would need.
Addison Koth laced a single to right that chased home Kosnoff for a 2-0 margin. Maryville doubled its lead in the bottom of the third. Corona led the outburst with a double, and Kosnoff chased her home. Koth smashed a double to see left center as the Saints margin grew to 4-0.
Ramey had at least one strikeout in every inning, and K'd all three batters in the first and fifth innings. Upper Iowa had a runner reach second base twice in the game but Ramey closed out the one-hitter.
GAME 2 | MARYVILLE 6, UPPER IOWA 1
Boyle picked up where Ramey left off and notched double-digit strikeouts herself. The game was scoreless through the top of the fourth before the Peacocks scored their only run of the day.
Isabella Garcia worked a walk and took second on a wild pitch.
Emma O'Flaherty came on as a pinch runner, and Koth and
Miranda Bondurant reached to load the bases. Lenon hit an RBI grounder to short that tied the game. Boyle helped herself when she ripped a single off an infielder's glove that plated two more runs.
The Saints tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Corona and Kosnoff both singled before Koth hammered a pitch to deep center for a 5-1 advantage. Maryville added to its cushion when
Cailynn Gdowski singled, to second on a ground out and scored on a UIU miscue.
