Uniondale, N.Y. –
Denise Van der Spuy tallied two goals to lead the Maryville field hockey team to a 3-1 triumph at Molloy University.
Consuelo Torres Moore scored to close out the offensive efforts by the Saints.
Jojo Cox held the Lions to just one score which game on a penalty stroke.
Â
How it Happened:
The Saints carried the early play but Molloy was allowed a penalty stroke late in the first quarter. King's looming presence in the cage forced Molloy's shot taker into a steep angle which rang off the post to keep the game scoreless after one quarter.
Â
Early in the second, the Saints earned a penalty corner. After a scramble,
Tia Sansone threaded a pass in traffic to Van der Spuy who flicked the ball into the cage for a 1-0 Maryville lead. With under three minutes left in the half, the Saints earned another penalty corner. Van der Spuy started the sequence but got the ball back from
Jessie Earley and drilled in the goal to double the Maryville lead.
Â
Just 14 seconds after halftime, Torres Moore worked up the left sideline, cut inside and hammered a shot inside the left post as Maryville surged to a 3-0 lead. The Lions were awarded yet another penalty stoke and converted to slice into the deficit. The Maryville defense kept the Lions at bay and without a shot in the fourth quarter to pick up its first win of 2025.
Â
The Saints had 12 shots on goal while limiting the Lions to just two shots, one of which was on the penalty stroke.
Â
Records:
Maryville: 1-1
Molloy: 1-2
