ST. LOUIS – Despite a career-high 21 saves by
Jojo Cox, the Maryville field hockey team was downed by NCAA Division I Saint Louis University 4-1 on a hot Sunday afternoon. Her save total is just one short of the program record of 22 set by Liz Bierhals at Lindenwood Oct. 29, 2022.
Â
How it Happened:
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Billikens tallied the first goal at the 18:48 mark. The Saints answered just 18 seconds later when
Jessie Earley's pass through traffic found
Denise Van der Spuy, who slotted the ball home. Her seventh score of the season ties the school record for goals in a year. The game appeared destined to be tied but SLU earned a penalty stroke with two seconds left and converted for a 2-1 lead at the break.
Â
The Billikens carried the play in the third quarter with 14 shots but Cox made eight saves. SLU finally broke through to grab a 3-1 edge. The Saints nearly pulled a score back in the fourth but had an attempt turned aside.
