NORMANDY, MO. – The Maryville women's basketball team nearly rallied from a 19-point deficit but saw its five-game winning streak end at Missouri-St. Louis 75-65.
Lindsey Schadewalt led the Saints with 18 points, while
Claire Lueken sank four 3-pointers en route to 16 points. Maryville was unable to overcome UMSL's season-high nine 3-pointers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Annika Pluemer opened the scoring for the Saints to tie the game but UMSL reeled off eight straight points to take the lead. Maryville received a boost off its bench to try and rally. The Saints stayed within striking range when
Lindsey Schadewalt sank a 3-pointer from the right wing to cut the gap to 19-11 after the first quarter.
Gracie Gopalan scored on a layup, and
Claire Lueken drained a 3-pointer to continue the Maryville push. Schadewalt recorded a three-point play, and later, back-to-back layups by Pluemer and Lueken trimmed the deficit to just one at 24-23. The Tritons steadied themselves with a 7-2 run and settled for a 43-32 lead at halftime.
The Tritons remained hot from deep and led by as many as 19 points in the third. The Saints rallied and cut into their deficit with a 17-2 surge. Pluemer scored on a layup, and Lueken drilled a triple. Gopalan scored on consecutive layups. Another Lueken 3-pointer closed out a 12-0 run. Schadewalt's three-point play and two at the line from Pluemer brought the Saints to within 56-52. Maryville trailed 59-54 heading into the final quarter.
UMSL scored the first bucket before Lueken answered with a layup and 3-pointer to bring the Saints to 61-59. Schadewalt sank a jumper with 4:30 to play to keep the Saints at 63-61. The Tritons had a score and tacked on yet another triple to push the margin to seven and held on down the stretch to halt Maryville's bid for a sixth straight league win.
