Saints Force Draw with Prairie Stars

ST. LOUIS – Despite a second-half offensive push, the Maryville women's soccer team could not find the breakthrough Saturday afternoon, settling for a scoreless draw with Illinois Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Saints found more opportunities after halftime, putting three shots on goal, but could not break through against the Prairie Stars.

Karla Krebs and Allison Estanich led the Saints with two shots apiece, with both of Estanich's attempts testing the UIS goalkeeper. The Prairie Stars finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots and six corner kicks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Agnes Vilen was called into action early, recording her first save just over a minute into the match. Krebs answered with Maryville's first attempt at 1:57, sending her shot wide left.

Another stop by Vilen in the seventh minute kept UIS off the board. The Prairie Stars managed only one more shot before halftime, a wide attempt in the 26th minute, as the teams entered the break scoreless.

Maryville wasted little time creating a chance in the second half. Estanich put a shot on target less than a minute after the restart, forcing the UIS goalkeeper's first save of the afternoon.

The Prairie Stars responded with six shots over the next 14 minutes, but Vilen made stops in the 49th and 58th minutes to keep the match level.

The Saints pushed back in the 67th minute. Isabella Moilanen's attempt was blocked before Estanich followed five seconds later with another shot on goal, which was saved.

Maryville generated another pair of chances in the 73rd minute, with Krebs' shot turned away and Sophia Carter's follow-up blocked.

UIS took the final two shots of the afternoon in the 80th minute, with Maryville blocking the first and the second sailing high. Neither side registered another attempt over the closing 10 minutes as the Saints secured the draw.
