Mutombo, Vilela Strike as Saints Shut Out UMSL

NORMANDY, Mo. – Yayo Mutombo supplied the early lead, Asgrimur Vidisson kept the Tritons off the board and Jose Vilela delivered the finishing touch as Maryville men's soccer blanked Missouri-St. Louis 2-0 Wednesday evening at Don Dallas Field.

Mutombo opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an assist from Axton Anom, while Vilela converted an 81st-minute penalty kick to give the Saints breathing room down the stretch. Vidisson turned away all 10 shots he faced, including seven before halftime.

Maryville finished with a 19-16 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Vilela led the Saints with five attempts, while Mutombo put three of his four shots on frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Petter Hanssen tested the UMSL goalkeeper just 90 seconds into the match, giving Maryville its first opportunity on goal.

After Vidisson made his first stop in the 12th minute, the Saints broke through at 12:33. Anom provided the assist for Mutombo's third goal of the season, putting Maryville ahead 1-0.

The Saints kept pressing, with Mutombo and Leyson Losada forcing saves just eight seconds apart in the 14th minute. Hanssen and Simon Schlunder added attempts as Maryville looked to extend its lead.

UMSL's strongest push came late in the half, but Vidisson held firm. He collected five saves over the final five minutes, including three in a 22-second span, to send the Saints into the break with their lead intact.

Maryville came out firing again after halftime. Anom put a shot on goal in the 48th minute, and Vilela followed with another in the 54th. Lautaro Olivera also forced a save in the 76th as the Saints searched for a second score.

Vidisson added stops in the 69th and 77th minutes before Maryville earned a penalty kick at 80:39. Vilela converted for his fifth goal of the season, doubling the advantage with fewer than 10 minutes remaining.
