Saints Rally at Rockhurst Behind Ernst, Braren Goals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Down 1-0 at halftime, the Maryville women's soccer team rallied with a pair of second-half goals to ground the Rockhurst Hawks 2-1 on Saturday evening.

Ava Ernst tallied the equalizer in the 51st minute, while Helene Braren delivered the game-winner in the 57th to earn the Saints their fourth straight victory.

The Saints have now won their last six meetings with the Hawks, although Saturday marked the first time Rockhurst scored against Maryville since 2023.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hailey Scheuer, who registered one of the Saints early goals against UIndy earlier in the week, tried to do it again with a dangerous attempt in the 9th minute after a pair of corners by the Saints.

Attempts by Braren, Scheuer and then a pair of shots on goal by Izzy Oldroyd in the 16th minute all came before Rockhurst could manage their first shot of the day.

In the 41st minute, the Hawks worked the ball into the box and sent a high chip toward the net. The Saints could not bring it down cleanly, allowing Rockhurst to claim the first goal of the contest.

Out of the break, the Saints went right back on the attack. After fighting through contact, Braren slipped a ball out to Oldroyd, who ripped a bullet toward the net that was narrowly saved to preserve the Hawks' lead.

After Maryville fended off a Rockhurst attack, Sophia Carter served a beautiful ball into the box, where Ernst fired it into the upper-left corner to tie the match at 1-1.

The Saints struck again just six minutes later. In the 57th minute, Allison Estanich hammered a free kick into the Hawks' wall, with the rebound landing back at her feet. Her second attempt was also blocked, but this time the ball fell to Braren, whose shot deflected off a Hawk and into the net for the game-winner.

Maryville's defense survived a pair of dangerously close shots in the 87th minute to secure the comeback victory.
