Cox Shines in Penalty Shootout as Saints Beat Wingate 1-0

WINGATE, N.C. – Maryville senior goalie Jojo Cox made a save on a penalty stroke in a penalty shootout as the Saints won a shootout 2-1 and recorded a 1-0 victory at Wingate Thursday evening. After 60 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, the game was still tied at 0-0 as the goalies dominated the contest.
 
How it Happened:
In the shootout, Cox made a save on the first two Wingate shooters. Consuelo Torres Moore lifted the ball into the air over Wingate's charging goalie and slid the ball into the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead after two rounds. The third shooter for the Bulldogs converted but Calista Crocker fired her shot into the cage to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Both teams' fourth shooter missed as the shootout moved to the fifth round. Cox made a save on the initial shootout attempt but a penalty stroke was awarded. Wingate's shooter put an attempt to the low left but Cox blocked the shot with her right hand and flicked the ball away to preserve Maryville's 2-1 shootout victory.
 
Neither team had a good scoring chance in the first quarter until Addy Timm put an attempt on frame that was saved. Early in the second, Torres Moore tested the Bulldog keeper which led to Maryville's first penalty corner. Wingate nearly scored but Ava Eiler cleared the ball off the Maryville line to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs tested Cox with a shot on goal but she steered the ball away as the game was scoreless at halftime.
 
Wingate had three penalty corners in the third but the Saints defense did not yield a score. Torres Moore had a late breakaway attempt but her shot was saved as the game moved into overtime. Cloey Turiello nearly ended the game for the Saints but was stopped at the goal line. In the second OT session, Wingate had two penalty corners and the Saints had three straight but neither offense found the back of the net as the game moved into a penalty shootout.
