Torres Moore Tallies 10th Goal of the Season but Converse Holds off Saints 2-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite Consuelo Torres Moore's 10th goal of the season, the Maryville field hockey team was unable to complete the comeback at Converse as the Valkyries held on for a 2-1 win over the Saints. Torres Moore 10 goals are the second most in school history in a single season, trailing only the 12 tallied by Denise Van der Spuy last year.

How it Happened:
Neither team generated a strong scoring chance in the first as Maryville goalie Jojo Cox saved the only shot on fame in the quarter. Converse had three penalty corners in the second and put a shot on goal but Cox stopped each attempt. However, Converse finally converted in the 24th minute on its fourth penalty corner as a hard shot tucked just inside the left post.

Maryville earned its first penalty corner in the third but Calista Crocker's shot was saved. The Saints kept up the pressure and was awarded six consecutive corners. Crocker again put a hard shot on goal but it was turned away. Converse doubled its lead on a penalty stroke as Cox guessed correctly but the shot nicked the post and found the back of the net. Denise Van der Spuy controlled the ball in the midfield and send a long pass up the right sideline. Torres Moore tracked down the ball and fired in a low shot to get the Saints on the scoreboard.

The Saints looked for the game-tying goal and had three straight penalty corners. Crocker's shot missed wide on the last corner. Maryville had one late push in the final minute but had a late attempt blocked as the clock ran out. The Saints had 11 penalty corners to five by Converse.

Records:
Maryville: 4-12
Converse: 8-8

What's Next?
The Saints closes out the regular season with a contest against Coker Sunday, Nov. 8, in a game that will be played at Wingate University's Graham Gill Field.
