Softball Goes 2-1 on First Two Days of Top Gun Classic

SHAWNEE, Kan. – The Maryville softball team kicked off their time in Shawnee, Kan., at the Top Gun Classic with a 2-1 record for their first two days. The Saints knocked off Fort Hays State on Thursday by a score of 5-3. Friday, the Saints split their day, winning over Concordia-St. Paul 9-2, but falling to Wayne State (Neb.) 4-0.

VS. FORT HAYS STATE
A big first inning came for both sides as in the first frame Laila Ruiz plated two on an RBI single. FHSU responded with their own crooked number, scoring three to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

From there the Saints kept chipping away, scoring a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to find the 5-3 final.

Jenna Kosnoff, Addison Koth and Cailynn Gdowski all recorded RBIs while the Saints registered nine hits on the evening.

Nora Johnson was key in the circle, giving up just two earned on nine strikeouts in a complete game for her first career win.

VS. CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
Six runs came early for the Saints as after just two full frames it was 6-2 Maryville. Poor pitching brought in a run with a bases loaded walk issued to Kailtyn Wagner. Addison Wolf then made it 2-0 on a groundout before Marley Williamson singled to leave it 3-0 after the first half inning.

Kosnoff and Koth then added RBI extra-base hits in the second, Kosnoff a homer and Koth a double. CSP attempted a response in the bottom of the second, but managed just a run.

Maryville added more in the sixth and the seventh, the final punch coming from Wagner with a solo shot to find the final.

Johnson started the game, going for an inning while Mia Maxel tossed the final six frames of one run-ball.

VS. WAYNE STATE (Neb.)
A four-run fourth was all Wayne State needed to knock off the Saints, as Maryville was only able to manage three hits all ballgame. Cora Boyle and Aubrey Scieszinski performed well in the circle, keeping Wayne State mostly quiet all contest, helping to strand 11 runners on base throughout the seven innings.

Kosnoff, Williamson and Mandi Lenon all got hits in the loss.

UP NEXT
The Saints finish their time at the Top Gun Classic with a pair of games at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
