ST. LOUIS – The Maryville softball team split a doubleheader with the Drury Panthers on Saturday afternoon, winning the first 4-0 behind stellar
Nora Johnson work in the circle, before falling short in game two 3-1.
Johnson was electric in game one, tallying 10 strikeouts in a complete game shutout to lift the Saints to the 4-0 win. Her performance marks the most Ks in a game by a Saint this season, beating her old team high of nine she set earlier in the season. On the offensive end,
Mandi Lenon nabbed a pair of RBIs, one on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and another on an RBI single.
The closing affair of the twin bill saw the Saints struggle from the plate, leaving seven runners on base and striking out seven times as they were unable to bring home more than one run, falling 3-1.
GAME 1 | Maryville 4, Drury 0
The Saints got on the board early, plating two on a
Payton Deakin RBI ground out and the Lenon bases-loaded HBP to leave it 2-0 after two frames. Johnson went to work from there, recording three, three-up-three down frames. Drury threatened in the top of the sixth, but a big three-pitch strikeout with runners at first and second left the score at 2-0.
Maryville went on to reward Johnson with two more runs, the first off a
Jenna Kosnoff missile down the left field line, scoring
Marley Williamson from second. Lenon's RBI single made it 4-0 an at bat later, finding the final score.
Johnson, again, faced some turbulence in the seventh, but recovered and completed her outing spotless.
GAME 2 | Drury, 3, Maryville 1
From the get-go the Saints were playing catchup in game two. An RBI double in the first left it 1-0, with Drury adding another run in the fourth to make it 2-0. Maryville finally scratched across a run on a wild pitch but that was all they would muster.
Drury added their final score in the fifth, using a sacrifice fly to get it done.
