Anselmo’s Historic Day Lifts Saints to 10th Straight Victory and Sweep of William Jewell

ST. LOUIS – There is a new single-game RBI record holder for Maryville baseball, as Dominic Anselmo exploded for eight in the Saints' 16-10 series-finale victory over the William Jewell Cardinals.

Batting cleanup, Anselmo did just that, going 4 for 6 with eight RBIs, driven in by a pair of singles and a pair of doubles.

Anselmo broke the program record for RBIs in a game in GLVC play, besting the previous mark of six, which had been held by three different Saints and most recently set on March 25, 2022, by Elias Stevens.

In total, the Saints registered 19 hits, seven walks and four hit-by-pitches as Maryville earned its 10th straight win while improving to 12-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Notably, three of the four HBPs were recorded by Steven Schneider, tying a program record for a single game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints fell into an early 2-0 deficit as the Cardinals' Maddox Meier launched a two-run homer in the top of the first. Anselmo responded immediately in the bottom half, driving in both Jack Meyer and Jace Burton — a theme throughout the day — to even the score at 2-2 after one inning.

William Jewell continued to chip away, plating one run in both the second and third innings. Maryville answered with its own crooked number, posting a six-spot in the bottom of the third.

The rally began — once again — with Anselmo, who drove in Meyer and Burton with a double to right-center to tie the game. The Cardinals then handed the Saints the lead on a wild pitch that allowed Schneider to score from third. Justin Gorski and Matthew Rauser each added RBIs to cap the inning and give Maryville a 7-3 advantage.

Another two-run homer by Meier trimmed the lead to one two innings later, but the Saints responded again with a bigger inning. Anselmo cleared the bases with his second double of the day, tallying three more RBIs to extend the lead to 10-6.

RBIs from Greyson Rathgeb, Rauser, Meyer and another from Anselmo added four more runs in the sixth. William Jewell made a late push with three runs in the seventh, but a Burton homer in the eighth provided insurance as the Saints closed it out.

Noah Leingang and Alex Bryan combined for three innings out of the bullpen, with Bryan striking out four. Nolan Miller earned the win on the mound.

UP NEXT
With Easter coming up, the Saints have a rare Thursday, Friday, Saturday series on the docket, heading west to Drury starting on April 2.
